K&N and 302

I ordered a K&N FIPK (i.e., not just the air filter--the whole injector performance kit) for my '91 F-150 with 302. What can I expect as far as acceleration, fuel mileage, and (especially) towing performance versus what I had before (bone stock?)

How much will a Bassani exhaust improve things (headers, and all the way back from there.)

Thanks,
-Mike

The intake will help more than you might expect. On my '95 I modified the stock air box as I had already put a K&N filter in. The truck showed good mid to upper RPM improvements, and the lower end throttle response improved. As for mileage, no change that I could see.

Bassani makes great stuff, but it is a bit pricey. I haven't seen any real data on the early trucks. A full system on a new gen Lightning gave 20HP and 28 lb ft. Not great, but the L already has a good exhaust system. I have a Gibson cat back on my truck and left the front of the system alone for now. I'm sure a full system would net some further gains.

As for mileage, I haven't seen any large change with the cat back, but my mileage was already higher than average due to ignition upgrades and underdrive pulleys. I just put the cat back on in December, and I haven't logged many highway miles to really tell for sure.

Donate54,

From what I understand K&N makes two intakes for the pre-97 models. One is for the speed density setup that has two hoses running to the airbox, and the other is for mass air trucks.

If your mass air conversion is similar to the OEM you should be able to get a FIPK to work. On my '95 there are two tubes from the throttle bodies which "Y" into one larger tube. The larger tube has the MAS and then leads into the air box.

Cool

Donate54, yes the K&N does work with the mass air. I put one on my truck about a year ago. The K&N FIPK fits on the filter box end of the mass air sensor, everything back to the motor stay the same. I hang around Neal "The HP Freak" and he has mentioned that I should change my intake pipe (goes from MAS to start of "y" at the throttle body) to a smooth piece of pipe. This will eliminate alot of turbulance within that section of the intake so the air flows more smoothly. Better flow means better power. I haven't done this yet but I may try it in the future to see what it does but I have to remember that I am dealing with a 20 ft., 2 1/2 ton truck. Hope this helps.

Have Fun & Keep on Truckin'
Dean

Kidd,

I am running a K&N FIPK on my 5.0 truck.

K&N #57-2510 will fit on F-150, 250, and Bronco's model years 1994-1996.

Hope this helps.

I installed the FIPK on my 302... WOW!!! Unbelievable sound!!! Is it supposed to be this loud when you punch the throttle? I love it!

Not quite the performance gains I had expected... although I suppose I can't really complain.

Next question...

How much difference will a Bassani exhaust/headers make now that I've opened up the intake?

How much louder will it be?

I'm pretty well sold on the Bassani system... Just want my $800 to make a difference...

Question

I have a K&N FIPK on my 302 and I noticed a slight decrease in my gas mileage. Could this be due to my possible heavier right foot testing out the new and improved air filter or has anyone else noticed worse gas mileage with the K&N FIPK?

I did notice a nice mid range power increase as well as better freeway power. However I can't say that I notice any off the line power increases. Keep in mind I already had a K&N replacement filter in my truck, too. So I can only imagine the improvement over a dirty old OEM filter.

My truck:

1990 F-150, reg. cab, short bed
Rebuilt 302 V8, 4x4, XLT Lariat
2 tone grey (worst color to have!)
4.10 gear ratio with limited slip
Gibson shorty headers
K&N FIPK
Crane Cams Compucam
High flow cat. converter
Flowmaster muffler with turndown pipes (no more 3.5" tips!)
4" suspension lift with extended radius arms
35x12.50" Dunlop Mud Rovers
15x10" rims
Alpine cd player
Alpine amp with Infiniti speakers
MTX loudspeakers (soon to be replaced by a sub.)
bedliner, Delta diamond plated toolbox
Ford trailer hitch cover

Remaining mods...

Superchip
Paintjob
MTX sub
brushguard, fog lights
