gas tank overflowing
the gas tanks in my 92 f150 seem to flood together in the front tank and spills back out through the cap right in front of my left rear tire. This happen to anyone else or any suggestions
Elliotfb,
Ford recently announced a recall on 93 f-150's for the exact problem. They are replacing the fuel pressure regulator. Seems that the regulator wears out and the pressure goes too high and causes the fuel to go from the tank in use and overfill the other tank. I am still waiting on my recall notice, although my truck hasn't had any problems yet. Hear is where I heard about the recall.

Yep, Ford had a recall out on this...but good luck getting it done at your dealer, especially if you bought the truck used. Their response will be...you're on your own!! Now you can pay them to fix it...big $$$ or you can replace the fuel pump in the front tank. The built-in check valve on that pump is bad...that's why the tank overflows. Been there, done that. You can do this yourself, but it takes about 3 hours of your time, some skill and patience, some $$$, and at least one buddy to help you. Buy the pump...they retail for about $200 (same pump front or rear). Take your bed bolts/nuts off, remove the tailgate, loosen the filler hose clamps on both tanks (right behind the filler doors), disconnect your tail lights and depressurize the fuel system by hitting the inertia switch and cranking the engine till it dies. Now have a buddy help you lift and scoot the bed up and back about 2 feet. Now you can access the front tank pump without dropping the tank. Carefully remove the two fuel lines, note where they go, and undo the electrical connector. Now undo the lock ring on the pump and pull and replace the pump. It's a chore but can be done in your driveway if you like DIY projects. Otherwise, buy the pump and take it to a shop you trust.
My little problem is the fuel pumps failing in hot weather. Three years ago we had an extremely hot summer here in the Denver area and the hi-ways were littered with early 90’s model Ford trucks and SUVs, it turns out that the fuel pumps cavitate when the fuel in the return lines reaches a certain temperature. I replaced my rear fuel pump (fortunately, 15 minutes into the job it dawned on me to just remove the bed to get to the pumps instead of doing it the hard way) and was on my way.
A couple of weeks ago I got a nasty surprise while driving over a mountain pass, the problem has returned already!
My questions are: am I going to have to shell out $200 for a fuel pump every 2 or 3 years? Could it possibly be something else this time like the fuel pressure regulator? Are there any other fixes that might help like heat shielding around the return line (I doubt this but who knows)? Is there a chance in hell Ford will warranty the replacement fuel pump that’s failed?
thanks for any imput, Steve

I’m totally confused now. I got the recall notice on my 1992
F-150 about the fuel overflow problem but that notice says to replace the forward fuel pump, it says nothing about the fuel pressure regulator!
