Rear Wheel Brake Cylinder replacement tips

Anyone have any advice for replacing the rear wheel cylinders on a 90 F150? Tips, things to do, not to do?

I am not that familiar with drum brakes, so any advice would be appreciated.

Click my black Bronco in my signature & read the captions in the Brakes & Hubs album, particularly those photos & diagrams of the drum system.

Very nice collection of pictures, however not the instruction I was looking for. I will be relying on my Haynes book. To get the rear wheel cylinder off, how much of the brakes must I break down?

Not much. The equalizer bar between the shoes will hold them apart if you pry them out of the slave pushrods. With some effort, you can remove ONLY the slave cylinder.

If you are doing a replacement on both sides, just do a complete rebuild while you are in there, then you can forget about it for a while.

Fixed. Actually was fairly simple, I was more scared than I needed to be. I took the two springs and the cable off the anchor pin and spread them open enough to replace the cylinder. On one side the drum was too tight to slide off so I accessed the adjustment dial from the backplate (thank you to Haynes book for that). Then bled the brakes and went back for a state re-inspection and PASSED!

The brakes looked in good shape so I didn't do a rebuild. I'm certain the shop that was doing the inspection would have told me if I needed to do more to them. One of the cylinders actually was leaking so it did indeed need replaced.

Thank you for your replies!!!
