Packing it with grease won't prevent the fire - it might contribute, depending on what kind of grease it was.

It's very easy to convert. Get any 3G that fits on your engine, splice the 2 heavy wires to the 1 ring terminal for the 3G's output, splice the smaller 3rd wire to the single-wire connector that goes into the 3G case, and I think the 3-wire VR connector plugs straight in. You might need a different belt, depending on which 3G you install.

But I'm still surprised that a '92 had a 2G on it. What's the 10th digit of the VIN? Are the headlights curved, or big flat squares? Is the e-brake pedal spaced out from the kick panel, or is it bolted to a big Aluminum casting?

big flat squares. e brake is spaced out just a lil.

and it had grease on it from the box so i assume they know about this prob.

if it catchs fire again she'll be prepared....soon im gonna get her a mini fire extinguisher for her truck.

also funny story after we got it fixed took it to a burger joint on the way back she got rolled by the cops for no single and her friend wasnt wearing a seat belt.

he came up and looked at me and said "ive never seen the bigger person ride in the middle how did that happen? i said i dont know. he said why arent you driving?? i said its her truck. he started laughin.

her friend got a ticket for 65 bucks i did not bc i was in the middle ha. and no ticket on the turn single because she used it she always does it was a reason to roll us.

That's an '87-91, which is why it has a 2G. Read this caption & post accurate info:

Hold it... Earlier in this thread, you posted this pic, which shows curved headlights:

Is that the truck with the 2G? These are flat square headlights:

I'm confused. And if that is infact the truck he is working on... why. I've only seen a couple of trucks with worse rust than that. And they are on farms.
So for a 3g upgrade could I take the alternator from a 92-96 f150 with the 4.9?

love my 95 4.9 but I can tell you a couple issues to look for. if it is a manual trans take a look at the rear trans mount crossmember. Mine was cracked between the trans mounting bolts. when I went to replace it the part is no longer available and every single one in the junk yard was also cracked. had to weld it. Certain other replacement parts have been hard to find. Just something to think about. good engine though!!

wow guess i was a little behind posting on this thread, lol!!

ha yeah its an auto trans. pretty clean under it and that 4.9L i guess his other one lost the head gasket at 200,000 and he found one for 300 bucks running with only 110,000 miles on it. so it should last a while. that alt was crazy those never seen one do that.

That's REALLY odd for a '92 to have a 2G... I suspect someone swapped it in, but I guess we'll never know for sure.

Stay OUT of the zone. Most of their employees couldn't hold down a job flipping burgers. They know less about vehicles than you, and barely enough to operate the computer that tells them to sell you the wrong crappy parts.

I think the 3G transition was earlier, but if someone swapped in a junkyard engine or alternator wiring harness, it could be nearly impossible to tell how it was originally built. In any case, GET RID OF THE 2G.

Aren't those 80-91 side mirrors though? I thought 92-96 had the plastic mirrors? Gotta be a junkyard Alt. I second the 3g conversion, It was cheaper for me to get a junkyard 3G, bolt, and wiring. On top of the cost savings, the 3G puts out twice what the 2G did.
