im wondering if it would be cheaper to order the gears from summit and then just taking them to a shop and have them install it, rather than buying them from the shop. any ideas? i dont know any places around here that do that kind of work, thats why im asking you guys what would be a fair price. thanks for the info!

I bought my gears from Randy's ring and pinion, they seemed to know what they were talking about and gave me a decent price. Make sure you go to a performance shop that does a lot of these. I know guys who have been mechanics for 30 years that won't touch them. Depending on what type of rearend you have they can be pretty complicated. I thought i was going to install my own but when i saw the instruction manual that came with them i decided against it.

$300 labor is a fair price. The gears can be cheaper in the 8.8". A good set of gears for the 9.75" are approx. $275. Then the installation kits vary depending on which bearings that you add.

I don't know which rear end you have but if it is on that they use in the mustangs (8.8, ect) try going to a mustang specialty shop. most of them will work on the F-150 if the parts are the same. My local shop quoted me something like $450.00 labor and parts. My friend had a Steeda shop in nashville quote him $525.00 to do the same work.

I paid $400 for labor for font and rear diffs (dana 44 and 60)
I would go with Richmond or Precision gears. On th install kit,go with Timken bearings.
