engine swap: efi -> carb
engine swap: efi -> carb
im considering doing an engine swap to my truck (see sig) in the near future and i have my eye on a few 351 engines on the ford racing catalog. only thing is, they are carburated engines, and my truck has efi. what is involved in doing this swap as far as changing to carburation is concerned? am i better off just looking for a fuel injected 351? any help is appreciated!

I put a warmed-up 79 302 engine in a 90 lariet. all the efi stuff fit OK. if you already have a efi 351, take off the manifolds & switch to the rebuild. I think that is easier than going carb.

Carbing it would be much easier, but you'll give up some MPG and (arguably) driveablity. I don't think the 89's used an electronically controlled tranny, so you'll be ok there. If you go EFI, you'll need larger injectors and a good free flowing EFI intake setup. I think Trickflow has a 351 designed part now. If you have a speed density system (no mass air meter, just a t/b) it probably wont work. You'll need mass air. If you have that, which I doubt, you'll need a new MAF calibrated for your EEC/injector combo. If you want mass air, FMS sells a kit for the GEN 1 L's. With that 385HP long block, you'll prolly see 350-360 EFI. It just doesn't have the top end a carb does. But it will have monster torque. If you run some long tube headers, you'll have a killer setup. Check out the Corral for tons of Winsdor info. It's mostly Mustang stuff, but it's all the same really.
