94 f150 studder

I've got a 94 f150 xlt 5.8 e4od and whenever i start it and go to take off the engine sounds like it's flooding out. it kinda stumbles spits and sputters then takes off and drives fine. it only does this when the engine is cold. when it reaches operating temp the check engine light comes on for about 10 mins then goes back off code 173 (rich system). anyone with any input would be greatly appreciated as i have no idea where to start looking for the problem.the truck has 160,000 on the motor about 2,000 miles on the tranny and running gear. my gas mileage has also gone from 12mpg to about 7mpg

You could pull the plugs and see if any of them are wet with gas or have a crapload of soot on them.

Before that, pull the red vacuum line off the FPR & check for the presence or ODOR of gasoline. Read this caption:

If it's the FPR, all the plugs will be wet or sooty.

Unless you have one of the few, 95's don't have OBD2. With EEC, you need a specific Ford code reader.

the code reader i used was a OTC mind reader 3750. it works great for what i use it for. the plug for it should be on the driver's side just below the hood hinge kinda a triangular plug.

You don't need ANY code reader for EEC-IV; just a paperclip.
