So, not much wrong, then?

Again: a 4.9L often gets worse mileage than a well-maintained 5.0L; especially if you only drive the V8 hard enough to compare to the 4.9L (meaning RARELY going above 1/2 throttle).

The strongest 5.0L makes less power than a decent 4.6L, and that trans does just fine behind even the strongest 4.6L. The one in my CV (which spent a few months in a junkyard) has no problems, even with my "spirited" driving style... It's an improved version of the AOD, which is popular in these older trucks, though not as strong as an E4OD. Either is stronger than any contemporary stickshift, other than the ZF being slightly stronger than the 4R70W. The E4OD is the strongest, by far.

Hmmm. I was going by my experience with previous trucks I've had. Maybe I should be looking closer for an issue with with this one I didn't know I had.

Stewy, what gear ratio do you have, and what size tires are you running? What do you primarily use your truck for?

Tires are the stock size (235/75/15) and I'm not sure on the ratio. I'm sure it's stock as well. Bought the truck off the original old man owner who wasn't much of a gear head. Still had the original tape deck in it. It does seem to get into overdrive pretty quick so i'm assuming it's fairly numerically high. I drive the truck primarily to get building matierials for the house we're renovating (nothing heavy) hauling MX bikes around, and pretty much a daily driver. I have other vehicles to drive and i'm not expecting to get 25 mpg but 9 is not acceptable.

What is the axle code on the door jamb sticker? Have you tried reading out the EEC-IV for any codes? It may be something simple like an O2 sensor, that can cause it to run real rich and get terrible mileage. It could also have a clogged cat.

What exactly is "all tuneups", and what parts did you use - the cheapest, or the best? Before replacing any sensors or digging into the exhaust, do some simple non-invasive testing: fuel pressure, compression, vacuum, & codes.

. .
