4WD vs 2WD
It's an improved version of the AOD, which is popular in these older trucks, though not as strong as an E4OD. Either is stronger than any contemporary stickshift, other than the ZF being slightly stronger than the 4R70W. The E4OD is the strongest, by far.
Tires are the stock size (235/75/15) and I'm not sure on the ratio. I'm sure it's stock as well. Bought the truck off the original old man owner who wasn't much of a gear head. Still had the original tape deck in it. It does seem to get into overdrive pretty quick so i'm assuming it's fairly numerically high. I drive the truck primarily to get building matierials for the house we're renovating (nothing heavy) hauling MX bikes around, and pretty much a daily driver. I have other vehicles to drive and i'm not expecting to get 25 mpg but 9 is not acceptable.
What is the axle code on the door jamb sticker? Have you tried reading out the EEC-IV for any codes? It may be something simple like an O2 sensor, that can cause it to run real rich and get terrible mileage. It could also have a clogged cat.

Not sure how far this is from you but I figured it was worth showing you stew.
