I was thinkin automatic. i was thinking maybe you meant speed/acceleration wise since we were talking about doing 70mph towing. I pull way better/faster/more easily with the 4.88's than i did the 3.55's. Ifyou were to buy a superduty, it's not going to have anything lower than a 3.73 or a 4.10 in it. If he wants to go 70 loaded he's gonna need a lower gear. Torque multiplication

Gas superduty*

Done right, it won't hurt anything. And if you're doing things wrong, you don't need to tow anything to trash a transmission or truck.

But he's talking about his '74 F100 with a 300ci I6. Increasing torque at the wheels reduces speed (conservation of energy), and that engine falls on its face >3500RPM. So to go fast, he needs higher gears (like my 3.08s) and a granny manual (like my NP435) or a good auto (like an E4OD).

Yea i kno if your looking for "top speed" go fast then you don't want a low gear. I guess your right, 70 is prolly getting upt here pretty good in a 74 I6. It just seems he'd have more luck getting it done with a lower gear unless 70 was getting up near topspeed. I think 70's unrealistic unless he's going down hill.. (sorry need to read better missed that it was 74, thinkin 94)
