cold air intake question

So I just bought a spectre performance cold air intake kit for my 1991 f150 5.0. They didn't have a model specific so I am making my own. My question is, would it be a good idea to place the intake duct mounting plate in the wheel well? If I cut a hole for it in the top of the well, would that be ok, or would too much crap get thrown up into it? Any criticisms would be much appreciated, thanks guys.

I tried that briefly on my 96.
Two problems: First, it gets road dirt and a LOT of water when it rains. Second, the wheel well is a low pressure area and doesn't push the air into the intake. I lost a full 1/10th in the 1/4 vs. the stock setup.

i would take a page from the IDI diesel crown and place the inlet on the firewall so it draws air through the cowl. check out hypermax's website under the IDI turbo intake to get an idea. pretty slick set up and wont get any water in (a few folks on oilburners.net are running this intake with no issues).

but honestly, factory set up is fine just look for a fresh air duct from a 4.9 or 7.5 equipped truck. it draws air between the grill and headlight and routes between the radiator support. then wrap the whole thing in HVAC wrap, that is a true cold air intake.

X2. Much more than a K&N drop in, on a non-MAF engine like yours is asking for an over-lean condition. Colder air is denser & better than more air at a warmer temp.
