89 Dual tanks

First of all I searched and read threads that were posted over the last 2 years to get my tank/switch/pump issues fixed. I sorta get it but not sure.
My truck will run off the rear tank only (i think). And the gauge doesn't work for the rear tank (shows empty all of the time). Both tanks are full. It did squirt gas out of the front tank once. The dash switch shows that I am on the front tank. But the gas is used from the rear tank. It's the only one I have had to put gas in. I ran out of gas from what I think is the rear tank and switched to the front (dash switch is on rear). It drove about a mile then died and would not start. I put gas in the rear tank and it starts up and drives fine (dash switch on front).
I got a dash switch off of another 89 (not new but worked) and it didn't change anything. Got the Dual function reservoir off the same truck (not new but worked). And changed the relay under the hood with a new one. And nothing has changed.
I assume it needs the sender in the rear tank so the gauge will work. Does it need a fuel pump in the front? What do I try next. The fuel pump on the frame rail is working because I hear it when I start the truck.
The truck drives and starts fine when the dash switch is on the front tank but using gas from the rear tank. Only reason I think that is the rear tank is the only one I can put gas in.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Rob

Checked with the Ford dealer today and the dual function reservoir is $181.00. I guess I might buy the new one this week. And I'll buy a front tank fuel pump.

Yes it sounds like your front fuel pump is bad.
It has to run to switch from the rear tank to the front and until it runs you will always be running on the rear tank and it will not matter what position the dash switch is in.

Thanks, I'll get a fuel pump tomorrow. Is the front tank a 19 gal and the rear a 17 gal? when I look up the part online it is saying "center tank" I assume that's the front. Thanks again, Rob

Put a fuel pump in the front tank today. Seems like it's working right now. It had a half a tank in it. I went to the gas station turned the key on and watched the gauge go up to full as I was putting gas in it. Drove around with the switch on the front tank and it drove fine so far. When I switch the tank to the rear it goes up to full but it's not full. I'll work on that one later. Thanks for the help,
