1990 F150 302 to 351 swap questions???

Ok well my dads 1990 f150 302 auto 4wd. he has had about 5 lbs of oil pressure for the last 6 months once the motor gets warmed up. well i took it on new years eve because it snowed and on the way back from the store it dropped to 0 and started knocking really bad. so we need a new motor and my dad wants to swap in a 351.

what all do i need he wants to keep it fuel injected and all that make it look like a factory install?

can we keep the tranny thats in it now?

what are the basics i need to know?

youll need a complete harness and computer for a 351. seeing how your truck is a non-MAF it makes it a little more complicated than a MAF. also, pre-94 (non-HO) 302's have a different firing order

the '94-'96 302 (HO) has the same firing order as 351:
1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

'93 and earlier 302 is:
1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

if you convert your motor over to MAF it will leave the door open for mods later down the road... heres my thread from my 302 to 351 swap https://www.f150online.com/forums/pr...-saturday.html

I believe all you need is a PCM of the same year model for a 351. You definitely need a 351 engine that was used with these speed density trucks. Speed density systems are not that forgiving if the engine doesn't have the EFI camshaft. Most 351s had the E4OD behind them, but I don't think the computer controls for the transmission are any different. A pin out of the PCM will confirm that. I seem to recall some sensor the 302 had that the 351 didn't, but it's been too long for my memory. It might have been a knock sensor.

Firing order also doesn't make that much difference to the computer as the speed density computers used batch injector firing. Mass air doesn't come into play until 1995, so I don't think you need to consider that route. If you're considering a modified 351, mass air is the only way to go. I have a 351W from a 92 Bronco that has sat for a number of years in my garage. I have the engine and all the components. It had about 80,000 miles when I pulled the motor to convert my Bronco to mass air with a highly modded 351W. If you need something, I probably have it. If you live near Louisiana, my wife would probably tell you to come get it. LOL It's only taking up space. I don't monitor this forum, so you might send me a PM if you have any follow up questions.

im pretty sure firing order does matter if it fires at the wrong time, spark does no good if its on the worng side of the stroke

I think so, but I'd get pin outs for the PCM just to confirm. Sorry, I knew this stuff better years ago and used to have the manuals.
