Ignition switch on a 91
Ignition switch on a 91
I went to turn the key this morning and heard a pop from the steering column. I can still turn the key and jump the solenoid to start it, so I'm thinking it's just the switch itself. Question is: How do I get the cover panels off of the steering column to access the switch, or pull the switch out of the column? Note!!! Steering column is out of a late 80's F-250.
The switch is actually down aways from the key and is connected by a rod and plastic bit that you most likely heard pop. Easiest to actually remove the column and repair outside the truck, or swap in a new column.

It was at least one of the actuators that popped - very common for tilt columns.
.
The column can be rebuilt in-place, but it's not fun no matter where you do it. To extract the tilt pins, install a hardened (Allen-head) machine screw into them & pull like a cork. Be aware that the tilt spring is VERY strong, so tilt the column fully up & be prepared for the spring to eject.

fixed my 89 f 150 in a couple hours. Don't listen to the guys suggesting replacement of entire column thats very ignorant. the part will cost about $8-10 bucks. for the mean time just run a remote stater up to the dash to use while you find time to tackle the problem. patience and skill is key.
Rebuilding that column takes a few hours, even for someone familiar with it who has all the right tools. Swapping it takes less than 1 hour, but you won't know how long it'll last.
