MSD Ignition box?

I was talking to a Ford mechanic (that's all he works on) about haveing problems locating items required to modify my truck (87'/5L) from EFI/MAP to SFI/MAF. He said "Be careful what I wish for!" Mentioning "Pandoras Box" & "Worms in large containers". He said he's done 2. His own vehicle, and a customers, but never again. He said the best bang for my buck (based on my existing minor mods) would be an MSD ignition box, which would extend to spark duration of each firing (more like a double tap) & leave me with the free time I've come to know and love. Anybody familiar w/these?

A MSD box may make a slight difference in economy and performance on a stock engine but it'll be nothing to write home about.

What exactly are you trying to achieve?

I Wanted to do the original mod to sequential injection & MAF because I researched the procedure and it seemed a doable, logical & significant upgrade. But being my primary source of work & leisure transportation, he seems to think I might regret all the potential complications along the way, and The MSD mod would be a $200 & 1/2 hour done deal. And enough of a performance increase to make me happy. It's a 87' 302 w/ 72K. If I drive specifically for max gas milage I'm getting 17 mpg city, averaging 35 mph & 23 highway at 65 mph. I'm useing stock motorcrafts, side gaped at .056, a 60k volt coil, MSD brass cap & rotor, 8.5 low resistance/high suppression wires & K/N air filter. Timing: 16 BTDC. 91 octane.

I don't see how you could do much better than that - to me, the $200 would be a waste.

With stock compression and stock cam timing, do not expect any increase in HP from an MSD. You'd pick up a little mid-range torque and therefore a little drivability increase but nothing earth shettering. You might or might not see a fuel mileage increase on the order of 1 MPG.

MSD boxes come into their own when you raise compression or put in an aftermarket cam

Sounds like I'm trying to fix something that ain't really broke. It's consistently running strong & efficient. Above the Norm. Maybe I'll stop while I'm ahead. I'm old enough to know what happens too often when chasing perfection (Especially on a budget). Without getting into the guts of the engine, I guess I'm pretty much a done deal and the MSD box might end up more trouble than it's worth. Thanks for the input (& saving me 2 C-notes).
