1989 true duals?

i want to put a new exhuast on the truck, and had my mechanic buddy look at it, and he believes he'll be able to route past the two tanks and out in front of the tires. i have headers on it, and in the pipe right after the header on the ride side (if sitting in the truck) has what looks to be an o2 sensor. why isn't there one in the other pipe? the current setup now is the headers go into pipes, then into a 2-1 muffler.

on my stock setup there is a little pipe that connects both the bank 1 and 2 pipes that has a o2 sensor, whoever did your exhaust probably didnt care to put a pipe like it back into the true dual setup.
heres a pic to help explain-

Even with true duals, you should have a crossover. It helps balance the uneven exhaust pulses in each bank that are inherent in a V8 with a 2 plane crank. Whether you do the crossover as an H or as an X depends on what you've room for and on what you're looking for. The H usually gives slightly more torque, the X slightly more HP. The crossover is the best place to put the HEGO sensor since it is exposed to both exhaust streams and gives more or less the average reading of the two.

oh ok thanks matt and ranger. that explains the o2 sensor and why the x or H pipe should be put on. where would the H pipe connect the two? right after the header? after that there is no room with the two gas tanks to go accross

IMO its better to have it as close to the stock location as possible. how is your exhaust run right now? is it run on both sides of the truck? or are both pipes run on the passenger side?

well the previous owner fabbed up his own exhaust. i guess he either couldn't or didnt feel like finding an exhuast kit for the headers he got so he just made his own. the one out of passengers side header goes straight back into a 2-1 muffler right past the cab next to the frame. the drivers side header goes back, then under the transmission, then turns and goes into the 2-1 muffler, which then went back and then out behind the passengers side tires.
