1996 OBD-II Code Reader Problems

Hey guys, been searching around the forum, and found some great info in the FAQ as far as reading codes. But I've got a bit of a problem that I can't seem to find an answer for.

I've got a 1996 F150 with the OBD-II (EEC-V I believe) computer in it. Truck started running rough, and I had a check engine light, and wanted to get the codes read. I took it down to AutoZone and hooked up the scanner, and got nothing, no link or anything. Took it to Schucks for a second opinion, and their code reader won't link up with the ECU either.

As far as I can tell, from everything I've read, all you do is plug into the diagnostic port, and turn on the code reader and it should link right up. I couldn't find anything about jumping any pins or anything. I tried it both with key on and engine off, and key on and engine running. Still get nothing.

Is there some trick to making the computer in this truck link up with the reader? None of the Chiltons or online guides I've read say anything about it... Hope this isn't a super-noob question... Thanks in advance.

if i remember right, some of the '95-96's may have an OBD-II plug but still has an OBD-I computer... the autozone here can only read OBD-II... you'll need to find someone who has a scanner that reads both OBD-I and OBD-II computers

Does your cigarette lighter work? If it doesn't then a fuse is blown. The lighter and DLC are on the same circuit. I had that problem with mine once.

All '96-up domestic vehicles are OBD-II-compliant. It has to be a blown fuse or bad ground.
