Truck wont start....

My motor started knocking real bad in my truck so my dad and I just put another one in. Its a 93 F150 with a 302. It wont start, but its getting fuel because after a while of trying to start it, it will back fire. What could it be? Plug wires are on right. Timing maybe?

did you set cylinder 1 at tdc on the compression stroke? then set the distributor as close to the cylinder 1 position on the dist cap when you set it in? do you have spark? compression?

i usually use my finger and put it over the plug hole then turn the crank and if it pushes air out then its on its compression stroke. just keep turning until you dont feel anymore air.

What firing order are you using the 86 or the 93?
If it has the 86 cam you need to use the 86 order and not the 93 firing order.

Its the same firing order for both 86 and 93. 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

I've got the truck to run now, but it will only do about 25mph then it like wont go any faster. Any ideas?

When im setting the timing I want to line it up to 10 degrees BTC right? Then put the spout conncector back in?

The Firing order for a 1993 and newer 5.0 is 13726548.
The Firing order for 1992 and older 5.0 is 15426378.

ok then which distributor did you use? and which ignition module? did you route the spark plug end of the wires as shown in the link provided by steve? which coil did you use? did you actually check the fuel pressure or did you just push the shrader valve? i would try the firing order that subford gave yuh. you may have an early 94 or a midyear change on your engine. its not like it'll hurt anything.
