code 628

hey all

so i got code 628, which I found out means "tourque converter lock-up error (e4od)" i was having this "rumble" on the highway prev. that went away after i did a trans flush but its back again now. have any of you had anything like this happen? I had someone tell me the transmission is probobly going but i refuse to believe it! If any of you has had this issue what did you do to fix it? Also i got a "MLPS(manual lever positition sensor) out of range" code too, but i dont remember the exact number.

E4ODs before '95 are notoriously weak. If yours hasn't been rebuilt since then, it's WAAAAAYYYYY overdue. Start looking for a reputable shop & save your nickels - it's a $1K-2K job.

For the MLPS, read this TSB:

To add to what Steve said, here's a list of the upgrades made to the E4OD over the years:

None of the AAMCOs I've ever been to were reputable, but ask around locally. Call a few decent used car lots & ask the salesmen which trans shops they use. You can't judge one by the name on the sign, even if that name is Ford. It comes down to the technicians that work in it. Do they keep a clean shop? Do they get paid enough to take pride in their work? Do they have a parking lot full of junk that they can't fix, or do you have to make an appointment because everyone wants them to fix their cars? You can certainly find a lowball shop that will take your money & give you back something that looks like a rebuilt trans, but it probably won't last. You can also find really good trans techs who have had to start painting houses or fixing lawnmowers to make ends meet, but that's a lot riskier if you don't know them.
