Crankcase Positioning Senser

I recently bought a 96 F150,4.6Liter 6cyl with 5sp trans.and trying to get it through inspection.I'm not gonna say how much money i've spent attempting to get the CEL to go out but believe me i'm broke for the next two months.Codes say I need a CPS and I need some feedback on how the wire disconnects from the sensor and how to replace it.Thanks for your anticipated help.

Is it a late 96 with a 4.6 V8?
Or an early 96 with a 4.9 I6?

and what was the exact code? no code will tell you exactly what needs to be replaced. they just give you a starting point for diagnosing the problem.

And it's a crankshaft position sensor and the correct abbreviation is CKP. The crankcase doesn't move.

Thanks for responding to my tread Ranger. My 96 F150 is a early modal.Made in
January 96.It must be the 4.9.Do you have any info about changing the Crankcase pos. sensor? The CEL is on all the time and the CPS is the only code
being tossed out.

Assuming that you do have the 4.9 inline 6:

Technically there is no CKP in the 4.9. It reads the crank position indirectly by reading the PIP (Profile Ignition Pickup) sensor in the distributor.
What exactly is the code you are getting?

All '96 (OBD-II) use a CKP/CPS, but only as a misfire sensor.

But as StrangeRanger said: codes do NOT mean to replace anything. Read the WHOLE definition & start diagnosing - don't pick out the name of a part mentioned in it & then go shopping.
