ok, well my transfer case craped out. so i got a new one out of a 1990 truck but the tailshaft is different with the new one, it has no hole for the spedo gear , it was for a electronic spedo i guess, but in 1990?i assumed that didnt start till 92. any way my question is can i swap tailshafts?? thanks in advance guys

 

The VSS is located in the rear axle in the 1990 truck, not the transfer case. That's why there is no hole.

 

for the benifit of future searchers you can swap tailshaft housings but there is no hole in the later tcases for the ball bearing to hold the spedo gear in place so... i srcatched up the output shaft with a die grinder and bonded it in place, so far its workin good got about 500 miles on it since saturday and the spedo still works. now i just got to replace the tailshaft seal since is leaks like a sive now.and the oil pan gasket so i guess both at the same time...yay
