making a drift truck
making a drift truck
Well i got this idea as of last week, and i would like some opionions. I have a 95 f150 with a 300 straight 6 4x4 with a 5 spd tranny. I would like to transfer a 2x4 chassis to my truck in order to lower it. after i convert my truck to two wheel drive, i will be installing a posi rear i have at my house, and fabricating a hand brake beside the driver bucket seat i plan to swap in. I would like to know if the 300 can be beefed up enough to keep the wheels spinning. It is has alot of torque but will it be enough? If not i can get a 302 fairly cheap. Any comments are welcome
well it has some problems with the 4 wheel drive system. The part that is connected to my transfer case shifter snapped and both front hub assemblies are shot. the truck was given to me. and for the price of fixing it i can get a 2wd truck. Is there any power adders or aftermarket for the 300 and where can i get the parts
Don't think cheap... cheap isn't gonna get you HP or torque enough for drifting.
Power is expensive. Think $10-50 per horse power.
Pull it and drop in a 351 windsor. Same motor as the 302 with an extra 1/2 of deck height so most of the 302 parts will interchange. More displacement means more power.
I am at 460 horse on a 351W, fuel injected, 1970's HO heads, roller valve train, 11.5:1 compression, MSD etc.. etc...etc. Without NOS, Blower or turbo. Adding any of those could get you in the 6-800hp range with different mods. My build cost on the engine is over $6000 with my labor and machining at no cost!!
I'm sorry but the 4.9 300 I-6 just ain't gonna get there without a LOT of money and upgrades.

well i have located a motor to throw in it, my dad is junkin the old truck in our yard and he said i could use the 390 out of it. At this point i'm torn between the drift truck or a street/strip truck. Alot of chassis work goes into drift vehicles. I dont know i was just throwin the idea out there. if it comes down to it, i'll just get a new crate motor for it i just have some nay sayers who think a truck can only go thru mud and pull things. would I be able to get it to be a fast truck and keep my 4x4? i dont know the pros and cons of this

a 390 4 barrel is a good engine, however what transmission does the 390 truck have?? you're gonna have to swap out tranny's as well since the one you currently have will not bolt to the 390.
the way your truck is currently set up a 351w will be your easiest cheapest route since it will bolt right in
there's many fast 4X4 truck out there putting cars to shame
here's one

Buy a ranger with a 4.0... It really is the cheapest and easiest route. It's light, already low to the ground, and the aftermarket is bigger for it. It takes a whole lot of power to drift a fullsize, a small truck like a Ranger would do it with half the power so you could spend your money on more important things, like fully adjustable coilovers, tires, anti-sway bars, endlinks, tires, rear-ends, tires, clutches, tires, alignments, tires, brakes... Oh, and tires. I used to drift a Nissan 240sx, it was a lot easier than a truck, though a drift truck can still be done.

well the 390 is mated to a 4spd manual transmission. It is coming out of a 78
f150 stepside. I can readily get a 302 off one of my buddies pretty cheap. I am looking for a truck with some more get up and go. He actually has all the parts i need to completely fix my truck, so i might go with his truck he only wants about 500 for it. i can swap in the 302, and fix my hubs and shifter problem. Is there alot of aftermarket for a 302? I know older mustangs had them but i didnt know if there was any difference in the way is was tuned in the different application. Also is there any way to safely lower a 4x4. Like without cutting or heating springs. If someone could point me in the right direction, my fast 4x4 will come together quite nicely.

soundslike the 302 will be your easiest route, the mods suggested above along with a procharger would get you great results
