steers short to right

1986 4x4,when turning to the right the turning radius is about 1/2 what it is going to the left.was told the steering box has jumped a tooth.all i know is its hit something bad underneath the truck on the drivers side and i know something is making it steer way to short to the right.lined up right and everything seems right.so,can it jump a gear in the box to cause this and can it be fixed?

if it jumped a gear then it would still take the same number of turns to steer. i would think it would be in the steering linkage somewhere, like something bent or something. the gear box is right on the frame so if something hit it it would have tore the hell out of the truck.
