Post Gear Question

I talked to a local Mustang shop today and they recommended changing the rear gears out to something like 4.11's. What kind of changes can I expect will this new gear ratio. Fuel mileage, Times, ect. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

im assuming your truck has 2.73's stock? with the 4.11 you will notice a giant increase in acceleration, but your gas mileage is going to suffer, especially on the highway. if you have a 5 spd it wont be as bad as an automatic, but it will still be noticeable. im personally looking into getting 3.73's or 3.55 to upgrade from the 2.73's i have right now. is this your daily driver? are you willing to sacrifice gas mileage for performance? when you say times, do you mean 1/4 mile times? if youre gonna be running the 1/4 mile in the truck then the 4.11's would be a good choice. good luck! by the way, how do you like the K&N FIPK? did you notice power gains over the stock setup? just wondering...

Donate54,

My truck came with 3.55 posi (limited slip, whatever the new name for it is). It is my daily driver and after looking at what it will do to my mileage and top end, I have almost decided to go to more like a 3.73 gear.

I have had the FIPK for a couple of years now and have no complaints. I made a difference in pick up but not much in MPG. But it has a awesome sound and was worth the money to me.

Fadex,
Im not 100% sure if its the same on trucks, but i know on mustangs a change from 3.55 to 3.73 is barely noticeable. Since you already have 3.55's, that is why the mustang shop reccomended 4.11's. If I were you, since you dont want to sacrifice your gas mileage, you should leave the gears you have in now and look for something else to modify your truck. Either way, good luck! Keep us posted...

Fadex, I think you'll regret the swap to 3:73 since you will notice almost nothing. Going to 4.10 though seems a tad much for our trucks since they don't rev very high. Unless you tow A LOT then I wouldn't do it. Go with an aftermarket cam/heads/intake that allows you to rev more and sure, then 4:10 would be great.. Just my .02.

JerryK,

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking the same thing but I am not shure what I need to do to increase the RPM range. With 4.10's im dead at about 90. Almost anything on the road would dust me after that. Would different heads, intake, and cam change the range any? Can you recommend any specific parts do do this? Thanks for your help!!

My truck has 4:10's from the factory, I tow a 7000 pound trailer once in a while and it does pretty good for a half ton. My top speed unloaded is about 92mph with the engine at around 3500rpm. At cruising speed, 65-70mph the engine is at about 3000rpm. And as far as gas mileage goes I have never gotten anything over 14 miles per gallon.
