Those guys are kidding, right?
AS I am a new member of this board, I have to ask.. The "v-6 engine" board guys are kidding right? I mean all they talk about is the power of their engines.. are they serious??? If they are, I have a REAL six they do not want to tangle with. Oh sorry my cylinders are straight not bent. All 4.9 litres.
ya know, if you have anything to say about the V6 engine why dont you post it in the V6 forum insted of hiding in here! I use to have an I6 with a chip, ignition, K&N FIKP, and exhaust and I will say that the day I drove my V6 I was so suprised that it had more power than my I6 with the mods. And since I have done a few mods to my "V6"!

There is a fundamental difference between bents and real sixes: one is a car engine, the other is a truck engine. Here is the thing: pull a trailer or a stump and you will wish you had a straight six. Drive it more than 150k miles and you will wish you had a straight six. The fact is that they were meant to be workers, not highway pounders like your bent. They each have their places, and I am not gonna argue that the bent is an alright engine, because it is alright for what it does. However it was never designed or meant to be a powerhouse. It is a 3.8L variant and all that that implies, however it seems to have at least some of those problems fixed. And, I didn't post it on the v6 page cause when I go there I get the distinct taste of rice.
At first I said to myself that your not even worth the time and effort. I know you have an I6, and I can planely see that you like it very much. My "BENT" six has done the work my I6 use to do and much more, I have pulled stumps with both, pulled traliers with both and I still say that the "BENT" six surpassed the inline in both catagories. As for life span my I6 had about 90,000 miles when I traded it and my "BENT" only has 22,000 so I have no basis for comparison yet. I will admit that the V6 is basicaly a stroked virsion of the six used in the mustangs and for that reason I had my doubst as well when I first purchased the truck. I have worked on automobiles for 8 years now about to go to 9 in december. I am very well versed in both engines so I do think I know what I am talking about. And I am almost willing to bet you have not owned a V6 truck yet or ever have the desire to own one, so untill you have the experience of what both are fully capiable of doing please do not jump to conclusions!
I didn't say the bent engines are worthless. Don't take it that way. Call me old fashoned, but I like torque not horses. They serve different purposes. Unfortunately no one wants a true truck engine anymore.. if they did we would still have "y" blocks, FE's, M's and big blocks. People want high revving, high horse engines. For that, the 4.2 is good.. it likes to rev, it makes a good bit of hp for what it is, but I miss the torque of my torque monster.Peopel buy the 4.2 expecting good mileage, but the never get it, because they work too hard to make the power they have. By the way, my 77 six gets 20 mpg pretty regular if I can keep my lead foot off it. The six was one of Ford's first and one of Ford's last real gas truck engines.. cept for the 460. 5.0? Not a truck engine AT ALL. 5.8.. close but no cigar. Modulars are nice, but again not true truck engines. I drive bent sixes all the time. I'll recieve my Ford Senior Master's in the middle of November, so I know a little about them. I know I have done about a hundred timing covers on the wee-six. I know that the cranks on the 4.2 are weak compared to the big six. Don't take that as a jab it is the truth: ALL 90 degree wee sixes are except for the odd fire GM's. Simple math... 5 mains (v-6) or seven (I-6)? Not to mention that offset throws between the mains weaken it too. Fixed several S/C birds that couldn't take it. Youre right, I will never own a V-6 truck unless it is a 3.0L Ranger or maybe the new diesel due out soon. 3.0's are gutless, but they last forever, and when I spend a bunch of dough on a truck I intend for them to last a good LONG time. Maybe a 4.6L Windsor/5 gear will find its way to my driveway soon. Let's just agree that we will neither one change each other's mind. The fact is, you want a highway pounder/racer which you have and in my 77, I want a hard working, long lasting torque monster, which I have. Two different engines, doing two very different things.
I have to go with the big 300 i6 on this one but that doesnt mean the v6's are bad motors i just think that the i6 is a better work truck and that is what i use it for but for a race truck the v-6 is better but that is just my opinion!

I have both sitting in the drive-way, a '00 4.2L V-6 and a '95 4.9L (300) I-6. I like the 4.9L alright, its the third one I've owned, but the 4.2L (my second) is far superior for my needs (towing distances, freeway driving, and romps in the fields around the farm). The 4.9L is a truck motor alright, just like the I-6 that was in my '70 Sub, but short of hauling trash or wood in the 4.9L, I'll rely on my 4.2 to keep on gettin' me there and back! I like them both, but just my opinion. By the way, wasn't the 240 (a destroked 300 no less)offered in the 60's-70's Mustangs too!!! Oh, well, tit for tat, Doc
