Aftermarket Keyless Entry?
I'm looking at installing a keyless entry system on my 1993 Xlt. I am curious if any of you guys have had or have installed a setup like this? The local installer wants $145 installed, and it takes about 2 hours. This seems a bit much, so I thought about doing it myself. JcWhitney sells a kit, and I know it involves quite a bit of time. No problem. What are your opinions?
I installed a remote start/ keyless entry in my last truck- '95 xlt. If you're good at schematics & wiring, it only takes about 6 hrs. + the right wiring tools & connectors. If you're not so sure, pay for the install. The keyless was the hardest part.

I am the alarm tech at a local dealership. While you could do this, $145 is a good price. There is a lot of time to be spent on it if you don't run into any problems. If you get the kit from Jc Whitney, you most likely will also need to wire up some relays too. All this adds to the complication of it all. What if you have a problem with the installation? Who are you gonna call? (Ghostbusters won't help) Do you know what wires to tap into and their locations? These are all things to consider before you decide to do it yourself. Good luck, and may the force be with you.

I'm getting ready to install an alarm/keyless system myself. Doesn't seem to complicated. I have the wiring diagrams so I guess that's half the battle. THe JC Whitney system seems like a deal.

The guy I talked to, told me that he would have to rig up 4 different relays. I don't think I have the patience or knowledge to tackle it myself.
Hank: You might mention your progress. I am going to get mine done here pretty soon. I would prefer to have it done by someone I trust, who can also do it pretty cheap. Where did you get your diagrams? Have you gotten your kit yet?

I am getting the Bulldog kit from JCW. I have the factory shop manuals for my truck. I think Bulldog also has wiring diagrams on their website (not sure). Should've had the kit a month ago, but my postmaster decided to be difficult and sent it back (won't happen again). It should be in tomorrow. I really don't see how it could be that difficult. The one i'm getting is a keyless entry/alarm kit. Seems very similar to the factory Ford system. It uses the vehicles horn as an alarm. To my knowledge that is the only relay I should have to hook up. It has a four button controller. Lock/unlock; panic; and two buttons for window rollup, remote start, ect...you choose. Horn blows and lights flash when you lock or unlock the doors and it has a dome light timer. Seems like a good kit. Can't be more involved than installing the cruise control on my car. I'll let you know how it goes.
