oil change knock
I have a 96 F150 with the 302. I acquired it with 78k on it. When I do an oil change, the first time i start it up, it knocks for about 5 seconds or so, then it is fine. The reason I question this, is I have had other Ford trucks, and have never had this problem before. Yes, I do drain the oil when hot, but that noise hurts!!
Easy solution. Fill the new oil filter with as much oil as you can, without having it run out for the tilt needed to install it.
An even better, but more work idea, is to pull the coil wire out of the coil, clip in an alligator clip lead into the coil nose, and ground the other end. This disables the ignition, without damage. Then just crank it with the starter about 10 seconds, stop, hook up coil wire again, and start it regular. This last method allows the oil pump to prime the filter before running it under bearing load. Easy for your truck since you have only one coil to mess with.
