Cannot turn distributer to set timing, 81 F-150
My 81' Trailer Special is pinging ferociously. Checked the timing and it is way too advanced. Factory warning states "timing is not adjustable see service manual". What is up with that?

What engine do you have?
Is it locked down? I can't remember what the timing is supposed to be set at on my old 83 F-150 with the duraspark and the 302/2 barrel. If its not locked down, can you take it completely out?

Do you have the 300 I6? I don't know, but that statement sounds a little strange. I've got an '82 F150 and haven't had any porblems with setting my timing. The 300 doesn't have a timing chain and there may be some type of issue with pulling the distributor and rotating it. Did you check the timing with the vacuum disconnected? Your vacuum may be causing the advanced condition.
