Double smog blaster!
I just removed the dual smog pump setup from my 86 F250HD 351. Man, what did they have in mind for those emmissions? A smog pump is supposed to pump fresh air to the convertors for cooling. The HD250 has no convertors! Needless to say, it runs much cleaner now and feels like it has about 20 more HP.

The 351HO had 2 smog pumps? Great, I am planning on rebuilding one and putting it into a 89 F-150!
If the truck had no convertors from the factory, why did it have smog pumps 2 at that?

Yeah, I ran into that when I was trying to put my '82 351W back together. I could only find the dual smog pumps and brackets. Man, that thing must have weighed in at 50 pounds with the pumps and brackets and all the periphenalia, not to mention it was just plain ugly. I couldn't bring myself to put it on my new engine, so I just dumped it and left the smog pump off. Didn't even get a raised look from the inspector! My original smog pump did not go to the cats either. But, they pumped fresh air into a chamber on the back of the heads to give more oxygen for a better and cooler burn. Man, I took one of those pumps apart, and the way they're built, they gotta suck 15-20 horses. I think a squirrel cage blower would have been a better setup!!

Smog pumps have been around alot longer than cats have. Before cats, the pumps dumped air into the exhaust manifolds to help burn any leftover hydrocarbons. They probably put two pumps on to avoid having to put cats on. I also think that 86 and early 87's were the last ones with carbs and no cats on the heavy duty Fords.

One more thing. Smog pumps supply fresh air to help complete the combustion process. They do not provide any cooling. In fact they make things much hotter. If an engine is not running well, manifolds and cats can glow cherry red.
