Question 95 F-150 pinging on 87 octane with 5.0 V-8

I have a pinging problem when I run my truck on 87 octane gasoline. I have cat-back duals with no mufflers, K&N air filter, and JBA headers. The truck runs real good, but I am curious why it pings on 87 octane. I run 93 octane and it doesn't ping at all. The truck is stock otherwise, and the only thing I can think of is the thermostat that is a stock unit. The factory stat is 195 degrees I think. Would a 180 degree unit help. I am thinking of installing a chip to get more power out of my 302. Any makes that are good (Hypertech etc...)??

Bulk,

I have a 93 with a similar setup. You might check your timing, it should be set at factory 10 degrees BTDC, and the computer pushes it to about 17 degrees. I reset my 89's timing to 14 as well as my 93, and it pings on WOT, but not bad at normal speeds. I have the Hypertech chip, which I paid dearly for, and I feel the SuperChip is a better deal, it has more power and is a bit cheaper. The thing youll maybe regret is the chip requires at least 90 octane, which adds up after awile.
