Post 302 mileage

Today I did another mileage check, this time cruising a constant 75, 92 octane. Tailgate up, cruise on, no ac, I went exactly 50 miles, and got a constant 19.56 mpg. I think that is pretty good for a 1993 F-150 long-bed 302/E40d, with a few add ons. What is everyone else getting?

Future SuperDuty owner: But I have it the sheet filled:

Didn't you humiliate us enough in an earlier post?

I get about 14 around town. The only time the truck gets on the highway, it has a boat behind it. I don't even bother checking anymore- too depressing.

I can't understand that Nomo, because your truck is closely identical to mine.

I don't know either. Had it to 3 different service depts when new- it would occassionally die when idling. They jacked with the timing and stuff, but only made it run worse. I finally set things myself and got it running right. The truck has a lot of power, but has always had terrible mileage. Pipes are black and sooty. The Superchip has helped though.

When my '93 was new I consistantly got 19-20 on the hiway empty. When reforulated gasoline came out, I lost 1MPG. I now get about 16-17 on the hiway, but I know the truck needs a tuneup. I have 90k on the sparkplug wires and 70k on the platinum plugs.

I believe I am in need of a tune-up also, maybe try side-gapping, I like to put new plugs in every year, and about 10k miles./

Today I pulled a 1000 lb. trailer(empty) 250 miles. It was mostly interstate and my average speed was about 70. Most of it was pretty steep (mountains-lots of WOT). I had the trailer, clothes, and assorted hunting gear. My mileage was about 10mpg. I usually get about 16 on the same run empty. I used overdrive on the straight & flat and used fourth on hills (even 3rd at times). I have the 302 with the 5spd and a 3.08(not the best for pulling) rear. Good, bad,???

Went from Sarnia, Ontario to Sudbury, Ontario and got about 24 mpg empty. It is about an 8 hour trip going mostly non-highway roads, average speed would be about 70 mph by the time we went through small towns, etc. Never really hauled anything with the truck other than a load of wood but the tank was about half full when it started the short trip (90 miles). The truck is actually better than my previous '87 Reg. Cab, Long Box, 4.9L (Straight 6), 4 spd manual. Not sure of the rear end gear though. I do know this one has a 3.55 gear in it. The '87 on the same trip did about 22 mpg with a light load, nothing to write home about. Probably would have gotten a little better but won't think by much.

Hank: I like your setup. The 3:08 is considered to be a "high" gear ratio, mainly for city driving and very light trailering. Does your truck rap up tight? The gearing is ment for mileage, and it sounds like its doing its job.

I don't have the 302 but it seems this is the place to post. I just got back from a weekend hunting trip. Mostly highway mileage until we got to the woods. I was pulling a 2000 lb trailer and had a bed full of wood. There was three of us in the cab and still averaged 11.89 mpg. This may sound bad but it is actually great. My average highway drive empty is 12.4 , the best I ever got was 12.92.

Thanks for listening.
Mike J.

oh yes I forgot, I have the 3.73 gears , 460 , and the E4OD. I left the overdrive on and set the cruise at 74 mph.

mike: My dad had a 3/4 2wd with a 460/5-speed and he only got about 12-14 on the highway unloaded. I would say that you are doing good.

by the way: Is your 351 in your 80 a Modified or a windsor?

It is the Modified. That is an excellent engine. It has 235,000 on it and will pull like there is no tomorrow. The reason I bought the newer truck was because of the 80. I was pulling my boat home from lake Michigan last summer and was cruising about 60, this is what speed I normally pull at on non-freeway roads, and a hill came up. I decided I would speed up to get ready for the hill and damned if I could only go about 65 WOT. I decided then it was time for a larger truck with a bigger motor. Now I can pull the boat at 90 if I wish. No problems on the hills either.

I would say if you don't mind shifting alot, your okay. I pull a 16' car trailer completely loaded at about 6000k and haven't had any major difficulties. I would swap for 3:73's next time.

Mike: Modified is the Big-block right? Excellent engine.

Nomo: Have you replaced any sensors? I had to replace the TPS because of corrosion on the wires, and replaced the 02 sensor, and the intake Air sensor, and the coolant temp sensor, that should/would help you run better. Also have you cleaned the fuel injectors and the throttle body, butterfly valve? I had that done, and she ran like new. Before when the engine was cold, I would put it in gear and it would stall. just figure age and mileage caught up with it.
