Post Rattling Mains

Hey everbody:

Seems like we could use a new topic, so Iam going to throw this out....... please keep in mind Iam pretty new to this board, and iam sure this has came up befor.

At start up my I-6 Really rattles,it has 75,000 on it, and was bought new. The oil has been changed every 3k and reg. mait.done.Iam guessing the its the mains, but not ready for a rebuild yet, my buddies say "ITS WHAT A I-6 DOES" but I have 3 of them, and this is the first one that has done it.

I know there is some guys on here that know there stuff about a I-6,and I would like your input!!!!!!! It always seems worse on cold starts, but does it even after normal operating temp.

Thanks Mike

Maybe you need a valve-lash/clearance adjustment.

I am new to the Ford crowd, but many autos I have had in the past need regular valve clearance adjustments.

Does the 300 have solid connections or are they adjustable?? I am really curious because my old 77 LTD 351W used to rattle before I sold it, and the mechanic said it was normal. Yeah right.

Cool

My father used to buy the 300 sixbangers in company trucks. The only one that didn't have chattering lifters after 60,000 was one that was raised on Mobil 1. All the others had their oil changed every 3k miles, also. Lifters would be my first guess unless I were to hear it.

My 4.9L (300ci) has what I call a diesel noise, sometimes, when I start it, but it never lasts more than half a second. It has done this since I bought it w/19,000 miles. It now has just over 50,000 miles, and hasn't gotten any better or any worse. I have observed this sound in other 4.9's, and have been told that this noise is inherant to these engines. Being a mechanic, I have always found this hard to believe, but like I said, it hasn't changed at all in 3 years.
Take care,
-Chris

Galdarnit! My 6-banger just crapped on itself. We had what you could call "diesel" rattle or what I thought was a noisy lifter. The fiber gear on the camshaft went out. 64k miles breaking motor rest of way down next week. Unit went out very quickly! Hoping this does not happen your way.

Just as an aside, I wanted to point out something that we have had occur in a few customer's trucks with the 300 cu. in (4.9) "Big 6".

It's a great engine, of course, but it is *very* sensitive to dirty oil, and tends to build up deposits. This engine needs the very best oil, and it needs to be changed at least every 3000 miles. A lot of farmers have these 6-cyl. trucks, and it's been noticed among those who don't change their oil as often as they should that they tend to build up a lot of sludge in the crankcase, and throughout the engine in fact.

Now of course I'm sure that everyone knows how & when to change their oil, but I just wanted to provide this information, for those it may be applicable to. This has happened to several customers, where they had their oil light come on briefly, and go out, and then soon lose oil pressure altogether, and in each case, it's been sludge buildup in the Big 6. Once the oil pan is dropped, the sludge cleaned, pickup tube & screen cleaned and the oil changed, oil pressure came right back up to normal.

That particular engine likes frequent oil changes, is the bottom line, much more so than newer V-8's. We recommend using Mobil 1 in a weight of 10W-30 year-round, unless you're in Alaska or some similar climate, in which case you want to use 5W-30.

Just FYI,
