Question 4.9 power upgrades . . . .

GOT ANY ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

I am looking at getting a '96 ex cab auto 4.9 F150 and hope to get some more power outta the big 6.

I used to have a '94 std cab 4x4 with the 4.9 and 5 speed and I miss that truck , but just want a bit more power.

I plan to toss in a 6" lift ( oh its a 2wd I am looking at ) and put 285's or larger under it. I will put maybe an ARB in teh diff for adverse snow.

I have another truck in the works for real bushwacking so this one is just for the daily commute - and curb hopping at the mall.

I am looking at the Superchip real hard, so far I have done nothing but an aftermarket muffler. The muffler opened up the top end acceleration a little, but more for sound than anything was why I installed the muffler.
I would like to install a K&N filter pack but I havent been able to determine if one is made for this engine.
I have read a few posts on here about an aftermarket electric fan increasing the HP also.
JC Whitney also has a performance camshaft available for the Big 6, and there is a 4 barrel intake available for those pre fuel injection engines.

If your gonna put a lift on that truck, I would recommend dropping the gears. 285's are sized at 31's? I would put at least 4:10's. It will cost gas mileage, but it will also give you more power in the long run.

Pastmaster . . .

yeah - I will do gears. I had 32" BFG ATs on my '94 4.9 with factory 3.55's. They were actually OK with the 3.55's

I will for sure either go to 4.10's

OR

Maybe a Gearvendors UNDERDRIVE. That way I can 8 forward speeds and have the top end speed needed for the pesky morning commute.

I ran 32's and 4.56 gears in my 4.0 Cherokee with 7" of lift and the factory Auto and really they arent too low either. I could that low still and have decent top end. And with the amount of lift its gonna get - it will fer sure be pushin a ton of air at speed.

Hey Fastford-

The K&N fipk part number is #57-2503. I tried to get a Superchip from Mike, but he didn't have one for my specific computer. I got one from Jet, and LOVE it ! BTW, get the K&N ! It will make a BIG difference !!!
Take care,
-Chris

Thats why higher trucks are slower. Weight and alot of drag.

Vancouver,

I have done pretty much every simple bolt on that is available to this engine as you can see in my signature below. I am very happy with the gains that I have gotten so far out of it. As for the gears are concerned I wouldn't go above a 3.55 because of the rev/speed limiter would kick in at a lower speed due to higher revs. I.e., I have a 2.73 rear end and it cuts in at 2500 rpm in 5th gear, if I were to put in a lower gear (I'd love to, but have a damn limiter) it would also kick in at 2500 rpm in 5th, but at a much lower speed. Why didn't you just send your puter to Superchips and have them burn a chip for you?? I did and I truly believe that is the best bang for the buck available! If you're looking to go internal on the motor try looking at Clifford Performance, they specialize in 6 cylinders.

Fastford,
I got my K&N FIPK at Santa Ana Speed in Ca. I can get their info for you if you'd like.

Let me know if anyone can use some help or advice. Keep on truckin!!

Fast: That isn't exactly true. Almost all of my friends have trucks with lifts. Except poor old me! The lower the gears, the faster take off, My dad tells me about all of the old 3/4 fords that had 300's with 4-speed granny and 4:10 rear ends. They are like the new tritons, they have BIG low end torque.

VBC: also I don't know if your new truck is a 4x4, I am guessing, but if you lower the rear end ratio, then make sure you put it in sync with the front. My 89 has 3:55 gears in rear and 3:54 up front. I have a friend who has a 88 Chevy with a 6" suspension and a 3" body lift and he runs 35x14.50 Thornbirds. He had the factory 3:73 in rear and couldnt get anywhere so he eventually put a 4:56 rear with Detroit Locker. More 2 cents!

pastmaster :

The truck I am looking at is 2WD. I cant believe anybody would actually put new rear gears in and not change the front if they were ever gonna use 4x mode.

My Cherokee had 4.56's in rear and 3.55 in front for 6 months while I dragged my a$$ customizing the front axle. I totally modified the control arm mounts , and the shock mounts. I was able to then use the Rancho RS9012 shocks - the longest 9000 series shocks. Also , the only limiting factor to front axle droop was the driveshaft , the slipshaft was too short and the driveshaft would bottom out. All told though , I had about 18" of wheel travel and about 40" or so when crossed up off road.

I want to have similar travel with this F150.

VBC: I don't know anyone who hasn't but I have heard of people who didn't think that they would have too, not a good choice!

Dear 94F-150,

Man, you really *have* done just about all the possible bolt-ons, haven't you? The signature line looks very impressive!
