Tranny shifting hard
My tranny has been shifting hard ever since I bought the truck with @ 70,000 mi. on it,(a '90 f150 4x2 w/ the 302 engine, and AOD transmission) it now has approx. 130,000. The hard shifting is when it shifts into over-drive, its a loud 'bang' and can down right scare you at times. It seems to do it more and harsher when its hot, which might not mean anything. Any ideas? I know a similiar problem has been discussed before but didnt see that anyone got it resolved. Something about a speed sensor? I dont remember ever reading about that sensor in my Haynes manual. Thanks in advance. Birddogg

I had an 88 Crown Vic that did the exact same thing. I replaced the speed sensor but did not fix the problem. The speed sensor is on the tailshaft of the tranny and the speedometer cable runs right to it. It has a small wiring harness that connects it to the computer. I believe a 7/16 socket will remove the retainer clip and it simply slips out of the tailshaft once removed and unwired.
I tried adjusting the T.V. cable (refered to as throttle valve in the haynes I had) and realy screwed the shift points up.
I finally consulted someone that actually knew what he was doing and he told me " After the trany has some miles on it the bands have a little wear and need adjusted manually" he also went on to say that the TV cable adjustments can only be done by hooking up a pressure gauge to measure the hydraulic pressure on the modulator valves ( one for each gear? )which is internal on this tranny, and is virtually impossible to adjust by the seat of your pants feel.
I would recommend taking your truck to someone who has the equipment to check it correctly, I burned my tranny up real quick and when I finally traded it it would hardly shift into OD at all.
Just one more thing, I would definetly go with a synthetic fluid when you have the bands/valves and filter changed.
Believe me it will save you a lot of headaches. Hope this helps:-)

My '93 AOD does this occasionally, usually if I accerate to about 45 MPH and maintain a constant speed. It never does it at any other speed and when it does do it at 45, its only every once in a while. If yours does it all the time, worry. If only occasionally under certain conditions, don't worry. Your transmission ever been rebuilt? Mine cratered at 99K. I'm now at 163K. BTW, on the AOD (not the AODE)the speed sensor has nothing to do with the trans. Speed sensors are only used with electric controlled trans.

Just yesterday I was riding in a '96 4X4 with a E4OD and it was clunking hard in town. So the guy I was working with disconnected the battery for about a minute and it didn't act up again for the whole day. Of course this is only a quick fix but give it a try if it gets real annoying. I know mine has gotten worse since I have been upgrading the horsepower. It used to be only from 3rd to 4th at a constant acceleration (not gunning it) but now it does it more frequently since I got the 3" exhaust and headers. It kicked down to 3rd when I passed a guy yesterday on the highway and when it shifted back to 4th while it was pinned it banged real hard again.
With the computer controlling everything, can a guy replace the current tranny with a different model? When my tranny goes, I sure as hell don't want to put in another E4OD.

Thanks for the replies, guys. My tranny has never been rebuilt, guess I should feel lucky to get 132,000 out of her. The truck has now started to "hiccup" (jerk several times likes it cant shift) when I accelerate after losing speed in OD, especially around a lazy turn, in addition to the hard shift. No problems at idle or parked revving the engine. Those new, shiny rigs are starting to look really good.
Thanks again,
