Motor Oil Preferences?

Hey People,

I was wondering what oil you can't live without. Was is the best oil out there and why. Feel free to give facts, opinions, and myths! Is it the best because it doesn't break down, price, what you grew up with, brewed in America, or the voices in your head told you so? What do YOU trust in your ford engine?

Few wrong answers, many right answers. A whole lot of opinions.

Honestly i have had no performance advantages with synthetic i'm sure scientifically there are but it must be very slight. I honesty use 15-40 walmart oil in my truck the walmart oil is actually up to parr if not better than some name brand oils look at the oil rating and the SAE certified stamp walmart oil has always got the latest oil ratings which is a letter in a little stamp on the bottle.

On pre-97's, it depends on the year and specific engine. In a 95, I'd probably use a 5W30 in a V8 and a 10W30 in a I6.

I've been using the Castrol High Mileage 10/30 in the winter and 10/40 in the summer. I might just keep it 10/30 for all round use.

I would have never thought about using Wal Mart brand oil, I might have to check that out.

WAL-MART 10w30 in my 5.0L

With oil prices the way they are, i'm going to forget about all that marketing I used to pay for. $1.74/quart supertech and I can't tell a difference between that and castrol/valvoline/brand names

Mobil 1 5W30. Changed every 3 months and the fram filters seem to keep it cleaner than the premium filters I tried. I tried Wix and Motorcraft and the oil always came out dirtier than with the Fram. I have 120,000 on the truck, 20,000 on the engine.

I just looked up the "official" recommendations - it looks like Ford has back speced 5W20 for all 1995 engines - 4.9, 5.0, and 5.8. I do not think this is anywhere near as critical as it is for the Triton OHC engines in the 97+.

If you go back to older years, they still recommend 5W30. I checked 1985 and this is the case.

Bottom line - the 4.9, 5.0, and 5.8 are a lot more forgiving than the Triton and you can probably use just about any weight you want.

Nothing like an oil debate to get things going. What happened to all the Amsoil people and the bypass filters? I was actually going to put the dual filtration system on and try the Amsoil route, but I'm never happy with the locations of the remote filter. Most are frame mounted and I can't/won't go that way.

I use Valvoline 10W30 with a Motorcraft or Purolator filter in my 96 300. When I'm going to be towing a lot I replace 1 quart of 10W30 with 10W40 of the same brand. I would use Mobil 1 5W30 like I do in everything else except for the issue of changing to synthetic in an older engine possibly initiating leaks. I wouldn't use a Fram filter on a bet (maybe i'd use one on a C**vy).
