Changing M50D (Mazda) Tranny for something else?

The tranny just went in my 1992 F150 4x4. It has a tranny code M, which I understand is the Mazda M5OD tranny.

Is it possible to swap this tranny for the Z.F. heavy duty unit? If so, what would be involved in the swap?

I've done a search, but can't seem to find anything that is relevant to my question.

Yup, with most of the work is done being a stick to start with. Gonna have to track down a ZF S5-42 or S5-47 from a '88 to '97 F-250/350 with 4x4 and only a 300 or 351.

So as long as I have one of those two units, from a properly equipped 250/350 it's a direct drop-in?

Any changes to the clutch, clutch hydraulics, or mounts I should be aware of?

Why not a 302? I though it was *technically* possible to get a 250 with a 302. Am I wrong?

The 302 in an F-250 was bolted to an M5OD-R2 so wouldn't do ya any good to look for that to get a ZF.

300/302/351w are all the same bolt pattern so yer good to go.

I'm 90% sure the tranny crossmember is the same and if it isn't, just grab it from the donor truck. Your master cylinder is good to go, the line might need modded, and I'd recommend a new slave cylinder.

I did the Zf swap from a M50D on my truck. Great improvement and direct swap.

I'll be able to confirm soon.

Just picked up a ZF tranny from a wrecking yard. Got the tranny and the shifter, but not the crossmember. Will need to cross my fingers on that one a little.

I'm just curious what you had to pay for it? If you don't mind saying. I got 217K miles on my '88 150 with the Mazda 5spd. and still working OK. But who knows.

$350 for the tranny and shifter. Don't recall the exact mileage, saw the sheet and it was 1XX,XXX kilometers. While looking for a tranny I was getting everything from $100 for a unit with 400,000km on it (ZF) to $1150 for units out of wrecking yards. Average seemed to be $800-1000, regardless of whether it was ZF or Mazda.

300 shares the bolt pattern with the 302 and 351w, so yer good to go. Make sure ya get a tranny for a 4x4 application.

Yuppers. Dropped in without any real difficulty. As long as you have the ZF tranny and shifter assembly, drops in like butter.

Now to figure out why the truck charges, doesn't charge, charges, doesn't charge...etc. etc. :P

Angry Spent $1,400 for a rebuild of the Mazda gear box in Nov

Wish I knew about this thread earlier. Mind you I did ask my mechanic before he did the work but obviously wanted the work and the money (I feel ripped off)

Thanks for all your input guys!

This is good to know I have a '96 F250 with the POS Mazda thats on its last leg. So all I need to find is a ZF tranny, crossmember, and the shifter right?!
