Cat removal

I have a 92 F150 302 with 2 cats at the y pipe. The back one has a hole and it needs replaced. I was wondering if I could remove that one and just put a pipe in its place. I live in PA and sniffy is an issue but I should pass with the front. Has any one done this?

The front and rear cats perform different functions and clean up different pollutants. If you remove either of them you may have a problem with the sniffer test even if you luck out and pass the visual.

You can replace both of them with a single high flow 3-way converter or you can replace just the one that's damaged.

yeah im going with strangeranger here youd most likely fail the test and did all that work for nothing! If i was going to to do it id go with one high flow cat like stra suggested more perfomance and probably cheaper that way if you can do it yourself...dont know about the whole sensor issue though :/

its just an emmision county thing. if you travel about 20 mins away from my house (next county over) there are no emmisions EX-Cats. So mostly its just an USA thing i think were "trying to clean the air" yea.....right

your gaining from not having any your not loosing anything from not having them. Yeah its just for emmisions and its less of a headache for you cause they can clog, get holes in them, fail ect ect and theyre a pain in the a$$ to deal with! sensors and whatnot! so dont worry my candian friend its all good eh?

You actually should be OK, I think that the emmisions test for your year is visual only, at least it is only visual for my 1989

But if you do get hooked up to the sniffer, you will fail, each cat has a different function, you can remove both and replace them with a high flow cat.

For those who have removed the front cat, what is the best way to do that? It is the one with the dual inlet single outlet and I've been trying to find a way to do this without buying the expensive y-pipe from bassani (I think thats the company).
