4.9 inline 6

Just recently picked up an 87 1 fiddy with the 4.9L inline 6 and I'm wondering what kind of gas mileage I can expect out of it. Also anything I should look for, be aware of, etc? Thanks

thanks man....

It has a 4 speed manual which kinda sucks on the freeway, but it will be fine for work. Plus it's 4x4 . Does this engine respond to mods really well? I'm not looking for a race truck, but my 03 F-150 took very well to Mr. Troyers custom tune and all of the other mods I did to it. Just wondering how the 6 cylinder will do. The truck is for work, but ya still can't help but try and bring out all of it's potential.

Yeah, I'm pretty much there with krazyballer - about 10 around town, 12 on the highway. Best ever was 13 with a 25mph tailwind.

Same here, the stupid dealer told me that its a 6 cyl so it gets best gas mileage out of all of the truck engines. Yeah right!! that's a load of BS, i love the engine but it gets about the same mpg as the 5.8.

eh, show a little love. The 4.9L is a very highly respected engine as far as torque, reliability, and longevity.

Mileage may not be the best, like many engines from that era, but keep in mind, when they were on the drawing boards, fuel efficiency wasn't a top priority.

I have the same setup and get about 13.5-14 in town. Note though that I have not been hauling and I drive very very conservatively. It is really easy to run it up in RPMs if you don't conciously try not too (depending on what you were driving before I guess). I try to shift up at or about just after hitting about 2K on tach.

I'm looking forward to taking it on a trip and see what I can get/avg on the road. FYI, I read a lot of posts and I believe the consensurs for the 4.9 was that you will tank your MPG the more you get over about 60 MPH (or about low 2K's on tach).

I have no idea on mods.... but I wouldn't spend (much) money on modding a truck that isn't worth much now and wouldn't be worth any more by modding it (at least IMO). And I'm not knocking your truck - I have an 88 300 six.

yeah, I hear ya there...I still like to have my truck fairly nice as long as I'm gonna be in it. I think I'll just put some exhaust on there and leave it alone.
