88 f150 pre-ignition when shifing auto e40d

Bought 1988 f150 xlt lariat two weeks ago have small problems but following
sounds more serious, hope someone can shed some knowledge on this symptom.

Tried searching for 302 ping/valve clatter ? when auto e40d upshiftng. Didn't locate any threads

Is there anything else on engine that will have a clattering /banging sound
when auto trans shifts too soon???
Worse on heavy load.

Like trying to use 4 gear in my jeep when 2nd gear is required.

Sounds like trans should shift at a higher rpm.

Should I be using higher octane gas?

Don't know ford or f150's always had GM & Jeeps

Thanks for any advice you want to send my way.

An '88 with an E4OD???
I'd bet against unless it's a very, very late '88.

Where is the base timing set on your engine?
Pull the SPOUT connector and check it. It should be at 10° BTDC for starters. At that setting it will run fine on 87 octane unless there is something else wrong.

If the timing is right run a bottle of injector cleaner in your next tank of gas and see is you've just got a bunch of carbon buildup around the valves that you can wash off.

Thanks "strangeranger"

I bought some injector/fuel system cleaner this evening.

One item I don't have yet is a timing light.

Will check transmission type if not raining tomorrow

Local service garage told me thats the trans model, didn't
check it myself when they replaced transfer case fluid and topped up differentials.
