oil capacity

any idea how much oil an 87 300 I-6 holds? I changed and seemed like 6 quarts filled it up, but just checking.

Pour in 5 to start, and then top off. Mine registered at full with about 5 1/3 quarts, 6 definetly would have been too much. If you didn't change the filter, 5 will be plenty.

my buddys dad did that when we were kids, and i never understood why. when you already have the drain pan out and go to the store for oil, why not change the filter??what are they like 3 bucks??

I always change the filter, but some people are convinced that the oil wears out before the filter does and they don't change it. I don't see the point of this, you've got nearly a quart of old oil in the filter that will mix with the new oil right away, and on most motors changing the filter isn't a big deal. Some are easier than others sure, but if you change it regularly you won't encounter stuck filters in an awkward position.
