4.9L knock on start up?

I bought a used 95 2wd f150 with a 300 six and 5 speed tranny. The truck is in great condition overall but has a knock on start up. I just purchased the truck two days ago.

The knock is a MOST of the time thing, but not all the time. It even comes and goes when warmed up.

I am going to change the oil this week. I always use motorcraft oil filters, but the truck currently has some other brand on it. I am a big fan of 10-30 penz but I have no idea what is in the truck currently.

I have heard good things about lucas and marvel oil additives. I have never tried either as an engine oil additive. I have had luck with the lucas tranny additive in my mustang.

The truck has 144k on the clock but runs like a top outside of the diesel sound on start up. Anyone else experience this? Should I be worried, or is this an easy fix?

Thanks,

Rod

Put in a Wix, Purolator, Motorcraft or NAPA Gold oil filter; NO OTHERS.
A lot of other brands have problems with the anti-drainback check valve not working. The startup knock you are hearing could simply be that.

Agree!!!! Have had that happen to me(bad anti-drainback valve). Get a GOOD filter!!! I prefer Motorcraft. Never had a problem with them!!!

My engine has knocked like a diesel since the day I put it in, and the original did it, too. The current engine has over 350Kmi on it.

Hmm, the truck I recently sold with the 300 ran great and quiet as long as I had it, just over 90k. Never any knocking or engine noise, though it was fleet maintained for about 80k of those miles. El Cheapo oil filters tend to make that knock. Use regular Motorcraft or Wix filters and you won't have any problems.

The 5.8 V8 in my new(er) truck is quiet too, except for a "clicking" every 30 seconds or so. I'm not sure what it is. A/C is turned off, and RPM's drop by about 200 when whatever "clicks" on. Loud enough to hear in the cab if radio is off. Not too concerned though.

check to see if it isent the thermactor or air pump making that noise. the little check valve and also there is a little muffler on it and it will make a knocking sound at certain times on the warm up cycle. if you find that this is the problam ford came out with a fix. you can change the check valve and muffler for a upgraded one.

since it is doing it after warm up It dose not sound like the oil filter to me. that usually happens only at start up after setting for a few hours. also be carful about going to 40 wt. oil I would only do that if after doing good checks on the engine it is revealed to be very worn out, which yours should not be
