4wd Problems

I live in PA and we are getting pounded with snow and of course my 4wd is acting up. I have a 1994 F150 with a 302 and auto transmission with auto hubs. The truck has electronic 4wd as well. When i first put the truck in 4wd everything is fine, the 4wd light comes on and the system works good. After about a half of mile while the transmission is still in drive the transfer case suddenly goes into neutral even though the 4wd light still stays on. I push the gas and the truck just drifts along in neutral. Then it forces me to pull over becuase the truck does not have on the fly 4wd and press the 4wd button off and a loud noise happens (im guessing from the transfer case). Then the truck goes back into rear wheel drive.

Out of curiosity I put the truck in 4wd and drove a block or so and before the transfer case slips into neutral I pressed the 4wd button off and the truck goes into rear drive but does not make that noise that it does if the transfer case slips into neutral.

Can someone shed some light on my problem?

Thanks

Have you checked the color of the wiring harness yet?

the wire that appears to be going inside the transfer case is gray. About 6 inches away are two wires together and they are blue and green.
