Fuel filter change

'93 F150, 5L EFI, 4x4, duel tanks. The darned filter is mounted on the left frame rail and the mid ship mounted fuel tank has it partially covered. I think I can just barely get my hand on the aft end of the filter. The front is out in the open. My question is just how to disconnect the fuel lines. My Chilton's book says to remove the clip and pull( it shows a hair pin clip). My line locking device doesn't look anything like the book shows. It has two ends that snap over the line and the filter inlet/outlet. Is it really as simple as remove clip and pull???? Don't want to start pulling around on the lines and mess something up!!!!
Thanks for any advice!

Those are "quick-disconnect fittings" & they're a PITA, even using the best tools. Click my signature link & look in the EFI Fuel Pump album. It shows the fittings, the tools, & how to use them.

BTW
Burn that Chilton's & get a Haynes.

If you'd rather a '95 Ford Trucks service CD, e-mail me. It's cheaper than a Haynes & has more info.

I looked at your album. The filter I'm talking about is the frame mounted filter between the tank and the engine. It does not have a garter spring type disconnect. The new filter I bought came with two new "hairpin" clips. I don't have that type of clip on my filter lines. I have the tools for disconnecting the garter spring type but these filter lines have me stumped. I hope I'm not over complicating the situation. Even if I figure out how to disconnect them, I'm not sure I can even get to the back line without dropping the tank. It's that tight and covered up!! thanks for the reply!!!!

If they are the U shaped plastic clips and the new ones that came with the filter look like the right ones, just break the old clips off by prying on the bottom of the U and removing the remaining plastic pieces of the clips. I can't offer any advice on the tight quarters.

The quick-disconnects use the same tools as the garter springs. Did you see the diagram of both types of connection?

On my '95 the front tank partially blocks the filter as well IIRC. Just unbolt the clip that holds the filter in place, and you should have enough play to get better access to it.

Steve83, sorry I didn't look close enough!!!! Yep, the bottom picture is the fitting I'm talking about. Guess I need to slow down on my picture scanning!!!
Looking again at my filter, I'm still trying to figure out how to get my hand to the back fitting to use the tool!! The people who engineer where these things are located need to be made to try and access them themselves. Seems they don't think about ease of maintenance!!!! Thanks again 'Mo

On my truck the bolt that holds the bracket on made it almost as hard to get out as just prying the filter out, so the first time I took it off I cut the bolt shorter, now it popped off quickly and easily.

Ok, im gonna play dumb....
what fitting are these, and is there a special tool for them. they look like they just pop off, but i dont want to break anything and have to fork out more money...

also, do you need a special tool to remove the O2 sensor? i just glanced at it and it looks like a normal wrench will do it....

Nothing special about the wrench for the HEGO.

Still don't see how to disconnect fuel filter

I have looked at the pictures posted and my 2000 F150 XLT has the same fuel filter connection shown in the ShorgasmIII post of his 1994 Ford. My service CD mentions a "Fuel Line Disconnect Tool" number ST1463-A but gives very little explanation on how to use it. The diagrams I've seen posted or referenced here are not much better. Luckily, it looks like I can access both ends, but I sure can't figure out those two clips and how to pull apart. My truck has 86K miles and this has NEVER been replaced! Starting to have rough operation at RPMs under 2K after warm. Plan to replace plugs but this is also on the list.

Please advise how to use the tool. Are they available at most parts stores?

Roger
