Using way to much gas

Plenty of other 302's before that, and have buddies that have the same truck as well. I can tell you this: You sure shouldn't expect more than 14 mpg as an absolute maximum, on the highway (going 60 mph that is). Shoot, when they first wrote reviews on these trucks back in the 90's they were turning in 11 mpg, why would you expect more? 302's with the E4OD tranny are NOTORIOUS for bad gas mileage- I have changed the O2 sensor on mine, it made absolutely no difference. I average about 11 mpg. The motor has 120,000 and runs smoothly. Sorry, but I don't believe people that say they went all the way up to 17 mpg with a filter and O2 change. Or anyone with a 5.0 and E4OD that says they are getting more than 14 mpg on the highway. These trucks don't get that good of mileage, UNLESS you've got yourself a manual 5-speed. The 5.0 is NOT a motor that was designed for a truck, nor one whose design lends itself to good mpg in a heavy vehicle. This motor builds what little power it makes at higher rpms. Not what you want to lug around 6,000 lbs, at least not at $2-3/gal.
I went from 10mpg after the 02 sensor wires were ripped out after goin through the snow, guess I hit a solid chunk. Back up to 17 after replacing it. That was on identical trips, only thing that would have changed was the wind. Mine has the AOD not the E40D though.
I did replace the O2 sensor this morning before work. The weather is supposed to get worse, so I opted for the lesser of two evils - 18 degrees and dry, not 20 and snowing and sleeting. Anyway, I went straight to the gas station, so I guess this tank will tell. It does seem to not load up now, though it still idles like ...
I should probably start a new thread, or search first, but...
It seems like the AOD, while apparently a pretty robust tranny, sucks a lot of power from the motor. It just feels like a real slushbox. Anyway, I have noticed lately that there seems to be a valve sticking in it sometimes. So it doesn't want to shift into second. Kind of bad when you start to pull through an intersection and it shifts out of first but that's as far as it gets. Anyway, it isn't slipping, even though I think it is still all original (except fluid and filter). Is it possible (or even advisable) to pull the valve body and go through it, maybe install a shift kit, but leave the rest of it alone? Or is there enough varnish and other crud there to warrant a complete rebuild if anything is done?

You could just replace the valvebody, and there are shift kits for this trans. Far as a rebuild these transmissions will go pretty much forever as long as you dont abuse them too much(same as most other things)

Can anybody tell me the difference between the various vintages of AOD? I found a rebuild kit on ebay for like $25 part number DK7600. I have found other references to this on other websites. Some say that part number is good for 1980-1990, and others list one kit for 1980-1983 and another for 1983-????. If the main concern for me is the valve body, could I get that kit and just go through the valve body? So many questions.
I couldn't really afford to go through the motor, but I had to. Now I'm even deeper in, and I have tranny problems. The lowest price I've seen for a reman is like $700, so a $50 part and a little labor seems pretty appealing.
Thanks for any help.

The new O2 sensor seems to have done nothing for me. I did notice that the smell of gas is worse right after I shut the truck off. I see no leaks anywhere. I need to find the adapter for my fuel pressure tester, but haven't been able to so far. Any other suggestions if the fuel pressure regulator isn't it?

I've got a 91 F-150 5.0 4x4 that's got 83,245 miles on it... it was my grandpa's truck. I've been struggling with the BAD MILEAGE all of a sudden... I use to get 300+ miles to the tank then in the past 2 years or so it's droped so dramatically that I'm lucky if I get 125 on a tank!!! I recently put 31x10.50 all terrains on it, that didn't change the crappy mileage much, i added the K&N air intake system, and replaced the the fuel filter, oxygen sensor and used the Lucas Fuel system treatments, STILL NO CHANGE. I purchased a new PCV Valve figuring that couldn't hurt any but i cannot find the damn thing! any siggestions on where that might be?? It had a tune-up done a year ago.... any other help in maybe getting the MPG back up??
