Check the o2 sensors and make sure the catalytic convertor(s) are in good shape. A friend off mine had his gas mileage go from around 16 down to 8 after a trip off road. Turns out he had ripped one of his o2 sensors in half. The computer was getting bad readings which made the mixture run rich. Smell your exhaust (not for too long, though lol) and see if there's any hint of unburned gasoline. Also, after driving for a bit, get out and look at your cat. If it is glowing orange, there is probably unburned fuel burning inside of it. I don't know if a clogged cat would cause your symptoms, but it's worth having that checked out too.

And yea it smells really rich' kinda like the truck is its own gasstation.

My 1992 F150 Supercab "was" getting 9-10Miles per Gallon. I Replaced the:

Air Filter,
added fuel injector cleaner to the next tank,
and replaced the Oxygene Sensor.

On the next tank I recieved 17.6 miles per gallon. I know I did not do it scientifically, but I was in a hurry and wanted better fuel economy so I did all the quick fixes first.

I used a regular Fram air filter, a bosch o2 sensor, and some off the shelf fuel injector additive for the fuel tank.

The Oxygene sensor is a quick fix, It is on the Y connector plugged in between the pipes with wires coming out of it. Just follow either exhaust manifold plumbing to where it connects to a larger cylinder with another pipe above or below it. The o2 sensor is in between. It should be easy to remove if the previous installer used anti-seize. Make sure you apply anti-sieze before installing.

Let me know if this helped you, for the sake of others looking for advice. Message boards have a tendancy to have all questions and no answers because people leave when they are happy with the results.

anti-seize or never-seize is a compound that you put on threads and things that need to move. It basically describes it's entire function in the name. It keeps things from seizing up due to heat/ corrosion

I just went from 12.5 to 8 mpgs. I have a feeling it has something to do with my o2 sensor

yeah, right

Sorry, I was reading this thread and just had to register so that I could reply. I have had a 1992 f-150 ext cab sb 4x4 for 5 years. Plenty of other 302's before that, and have buddies that have the same truck as well. I can tell you this: You sure shouldn't expect more than 14 mpg as an absolute maximum, on the highway (going 60 mph that is). Shoot, when they first wrote reviews on these trucks back in the 90's they were turning in 11 mpg, why would you expect more? 302's with the E4OD tranny are NOTORIOUS for bad gas mileage- I have changed the O2 sensor on mine, it made absolutely no difference. I average about 11 mpg. The motor has 120,000 and runs smoothly. Sorry, but I don't believe people that say they went all the way up to 17 mpg with a filter and O2 change. Or anyone with a 5.0 and E4OD that says they are getting more than 14 mpg on the highway. These trucks don't get that good of mileage, UNLESS you've got yourself a manual 5-speed. The 5.0 is NOT a motor that was designed for a truck, nor one whose design lends itself to good mpg in a heavy vehicle. This motor builds what little power it makes at higher rpms. Not what you want to lug around 6,000 lbs, at least not at $2-3/gal.

glad to be here!

I was just about to post the same question and then I thought to myself, "Self, why not search first?" So I did.

Anyway, recently, and all of a sudden, my mileage went from 13.3 no matter what I was doing, to under 10. I'm gonna pick up an O2 sensor tomorrow. Mine smells rich and seems to load up when I pull away from a stop. Funny (well not really) how so many people are having this problem right now. Is it weather related? Or are the O2 sensors not Y2k07 compliant?

BTW, I have a '89 2WD Ext. Cab SB 302/AOD w/ 237k on the truck and about 279 miles on the freshening (bearings/rings). The mpg thing happened about 2 weeks before I had an overheating problem. (Radiator cap came off.) Anyway, a head bolt broke above the #3 exhaust port and I started spewing water out the side. Deck and heads were flat within spec so I just put bearings and rings in it. The motor had 140k on the previous rebuild. I don't think the mpg and overheating are related at all, though it was a very strange coincidence.

Dave
