Lock Meltdown

I replaced front rotors and pads on my 88 4X4 f150 Then went ahead and put 2000 freeway miles on it. Most of the driving was up and down Big Bear mountain here in CA I had been getting horrible gas milage and assumed it was because of carrying weight up and down the mtn. I notice this morning the locking hubs were melted. Did I screw up when installing the new rotors? They have been in the locked position ever since I replaced the brakes. I am guessing that when I installed the spring loaded assembly (I tightened it as I would a bearing) that I locked it in place? Sound about right? What is the correct procedure for adjusting the assembly. All the manual mentioned was to install and adjust. In my haste I assumed it meant adjust as you would a bearing. Any help is appreciated. Thank You
