Running on empty
1989 F-150, 5-speed, 5.0L, 235,000 miles.
Ran out of fuel the other day. Now i have intermittent engine surging and the sound of a muffled pop out the exhaust as if it is missing. doesn't do this all the time or even together. Intensity varies too. Can be driving just fine down the road one minute and then the popping and surging start happening, then quits, then starts, and so-on. Can force both when i put in more throttle. The intensity and frequency increase when the fuel level is low too. Put in a can of Seafoam. didn't seem to do any good. What did i damage that needs to be replaced?

Weekend Update
This weekend, i changed the filter. Seemed to help but not cure. Noticed that the surging and missing gets worse after driving for long periods. Thought that maybe the ICM would be the culprit thinking that the hotter it got, the more problems it would cause. The parts guy agreed, so replaced that (he wasn't just looking for a sale). that didn't cure the problem either. Check the fuel pressure and it is dead on to the specs. Checked the fuel pressure regulator and that is performing to spec too. Now thinking bad injectors.........???????
Try adding two bottles of injector cleaner to an empty tank, and then add 3 gallons of gas, and drive for 30 minutes. Let it sit overnight, and test drive it the next day. If it drives great the next day, you're welcome.
If it is improved, but not fixed, replace your injectors. If there's no change at all, try disconnecting and plugging your EGR valve.
