4X4 Conversion

i want to convert my 96 F150 from two wheel drive to 4. i know i have to get new drive shafts transfer case and axle and spindles. but im wondering what kind of axles i can use. i was hoping to put a new create motor in and rebuild the tranny. the motor i was looking at is the 347 stroker. now i have two chooses i could rebuild my 302 or replace it. either way there is going to be a lot more power going to the ground. i was thinking of replacing the rear with an f 250 axle i was wondering if that would work and if it did how hard would it be to do the same up front. i know im going to need new springs but they are already a little worn so i dont care.

Since you're more than a few items short in your list of things you need to convert to a 4X4, have you considered that maybe you should sell your truck and just buy a 4X4, saving a bit of cash and a lot of headache?

The easiest way to do it is buy a 4x4 truck of the same body style, find one that is wrecked or has a blown engine and swap over the parts you need. There are so many parts you need you will go broke buying them piece by piece, whereas you can buy a parts truck for probably $500 bucks.

people ask this question all the time. it is alot of work, alot of parts and very expensive.

you'll need a tranny from a 4x4 or rebuild yours and install new a output shaft and tail housing, cross members need moved or installed, the complete front axle, spindles and IFS, springs. the list goes on..........

well tranny slips anyways and i was thinking of having it rebulit in 20,000 miles which will be next spring. which by then ill be out of basic with a big wad of cash. ive been sreaching for a fubared truck no luck yet. it is early in the game though. i want to know about the diffences in the f150 front axle verse the f250 front axle. i know they are both dana 44 of the same design but are both coil. i have seen f250 with front leafs. which is a little too aggressive of a change. i want to keep frame fab down to a minamual. it doesnt really matter but i figured while im replacing the axles and the springs i could go heavier duty. the price difference is not that big. i know i could salvage the axles but im going to replace the springs most likely with new ones for safety sake. and have the axles rebuilt too unless they a 4.10 and in good shape.
