Tune-up time! Need plugs, wires, etc... recommendations?

Hi gang!

Thought i would poll the experts to get ideas for my tune-up.
I need plugs, wires, and cap + rotor.

What would you guys suggest?

I've heard that the motorcraft plugs are excellent for our trucks, but dont know anything about the wires and cap+rotor.

I have a 1993xlt, 2wd, 5.0.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks Speeder!
I am going to pick up the parts now.
I sorta had Motorsport in mind anyway, but was just wondering if anyone had a better idea.

What? So if it is running strong there is no point in getting it to run STRONGER AND increase gas mileage?

Hi guys,

What is the HEI upgrade?? Is it expensive, or hard to do?

Also i was thinking of cleaning the IAC today, but have never done it. Looks simple enough. Remove two screws and plug. Is there a gasket that needs to be replaced. Also.....what do you use to clean the IAC?

Oh yea.....one more question! hahaa
Where do you get that Seafoam stuff? I've read some good things about it cleaning up the TB/Runners from carbon buildup.

Sorry for all the questions!

I've had the best results with Champion Truck Plugs.

There is a gasket below the IAC. Clean it (the IAC) with Brakleen (green can) and pipe cleaners. Make sure you reset your ECM when you're finished.

Seafoam can usually be found at your local Napa.

Just last month, I installed the Accel ignition upgrade kit, which I got from Troyer, and it has been awesome! Definately more HP, but the big deal is the 10% increase in fuel mileage. WooHoo!

Hi muddy...how much was that kit? Is it hard to install, and do you need to have anything else done such as the K&N hi-flow kit before you get it?
A few extra MPG would probably make it worthwhile!!!

Thanks, Glade

The ignition upgrade can be done if you know how to change plugs and wires. It basicly consists of new wires, plugs, rotor, cap and a high-volt coil. the best results by most who have done this have come from using some type of 9mm or better wires and at least a 48,000 volt coil. Here is what I used:

Ford Racing 9mm Wires
MSD Cap and Rotor(still on sale from Summit and a whole lot cheaper than over $25 for both.)
MSD 48,000 volt Blaster Coil
Autolite plugs gapped to 0.055

You will find that each engine has its own brand of plugs that it runs well with. Small block Fords run best with regular orange box Autolites. You can spend all the money you want on plugs, but the fact is you are still only getting ONE spark. And platinum plugs run like CRAP in these trucks. With everything I used plus shipping from Summit, the total was right at $120 for the ignition upgrade. You might want to also look into bumping your timing to accompany this upgrade. Do the HEI upgrade and then wait a week for the computer to learn the changes, then bump the timing to 13.5 degrees. This will give even more performance changes and an increase in gas mileage.

When I clean my IAC I use carb and choke cleaner, same thing I clean the TB with.

SeaFoam can be found at any auto parts store, and it will be the best $5 you ever spend. Let it sit for longer than what the can says and you will get better results. The first time I did it I let it sit for 20 mins(like the can says) and the second time it sat for 3 hours and the difference was night and day.

Thanks GT!

I am really thinking of your suggestions for the upgrade AND i have a can of seafoam in hand right now! I am about to throw some in, let it sit for 2-3 hrs then fog out the neighborhood with a late night smoke show! hahaaa!

Thanks for all the inputs gang......really appreciate it!

use the whole can in the vaccume line and then get another can for the tank. Putting it through the vaccume line does nothing to clean your injectors. To get the full effect you have to run a can through the tank too.

Hi Gladsteen,
I paid $225 for the upgrade. The plugs it uses are Denso iridiums. It might be a bit more than some of the guys are paying for well thought out solutions like the one GTRider suggested, but I chose this kit because it gets good reviews, and I had some faith that Troyer's technicians tested it on that motor. When I spoke with their people on the phone, I gained some additional confidence in them. I have been happy with my choice. The motor had been experiencing rough idle prior to the install (again - please note that I pulled out some ugly old plugs...), but now it runs like silk, and the hp gains have been noticeable. Installation was a breeze, but not without the usual headaches when changing plugs.

Bottom line on the ignition package: I preferred not to try to design the correct combination of parts myself, so I paid Troyer to do it. So far, I have been happy with it. Additionally, it looks cool - all those yellow Accel parts under there...

My timing has already been adjusted by the Hypertech chip mod, and I experienced an immediate 2 mpg economy increase when I installed it (at the cost of 20 cents a gallon more for premium gas). That was the single greatest fuel saving mod I did to this truck, adding as much as 50 miles to a tankful. However, I think I might switch to a more full featured brand of chip tuners (Superchips?), to gain more flexibility in programming choices.

Happy tuning!
