i cut my airbox

well i wanted to share this b/c i had a good result. i was bored yesterday and i popped my hood and started cleaning up parts of the motor..i noticed that the airbox was dirty so i pulled it out and cleaned it up,and for some reason i got out my sheetrock knife and i cut the bottom of the airbox out and ripped out the rusted metal that helped hold up the resovoir and all. i got rid of all the rust pieces and put it all back together, clean and modded. so i took it for a ride and noticed a little more throttle response. then got on it,after 3grand mark it tachs up to five quickly(especially 1st). it has more response and pulls a lot harder in the higher rpm's along with breathing well.. i was behindaricer civic and i jumped on it and he looked back in the mirror, it doesn't have that cool intake whistle like a namebrand one but it still sounds cool...and better than before....just wanted to let everyone know...sorry for the long thread...peace

I hope you know that durring inspection there is a law that states No modified air boxes...

Meaning you need the orgianal air box....

but in most cases they dont check

If they came Closed you cant open them

Laws vary from state to state or even within different regions of a given state. What is true for you in TX doesn't apply elsewhere.

I took my wife's truck through NJ inspection with an after market cold air intake, after completly ripping the air box out. They Don't care about stuff like that, only if it won't pass emissions then you might have a problem.

A few years ago, a member named Macgyver did the same thing, and was so happy with the results, just about everyone in this forum, that didn't have a FIPK already, did the same thing. Now you know why I swear by the FIPK!

I could be mistaken, but I believe the air filter box is considered to be part of the emissions equipment, which under federal law can not be modified in any way, in any state. It can be replaced with an aftermarket part (may or may not require a CARB E.O. #), but modification of the original part is a no-no.

good ideal

quick question, you said you get good throttle responce after 3 grand, and it jumps to 5 grand quickley. is this a inline six truck? im assuming not, beacuse my truck is about redlining at 3 grand.

Sounds crazy, I know. BUT... after installing a K&N FIPK in my truck (4.9L inline six), i got better throttle response at all rpms, and the rpms climb very quickly from about 2700 rpm on up. It's really odd, to be honest. I still try to keep it below 3500 rpm, just because, but it's still pulling up to and beyond 4000 rpm. What's really odd, though, is instead of the rpms slowing down as they increase, like most engines, once you reach around 2700 rpm, they fly. It takes maybe one second, tops, to go from 3000 rpm to 4000 rpm. I don't recall taking it any higher than 4500 rpm, but it was still climbing that fast, and still pulling, when it got there.

I'm not comfortable enough with my engine to test it to see just how far it will go before it stops pulling. I'm used to shifting at or below 3000 rpm, and feel like I'm pushing it at 3500 rpm, but I do take it to 4000 rpm at least once a week (getting on the freeway, etc.), and have taken it to 4500 rpm at least once, but that made me nervous.
